AASHTO History

AASHTO

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is a non-profit, non-partisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.  AASHTO represents all five transportation modes: air, highways, public transportation, rail, and water.  Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system.  The Association provides a forum for consideration of transportation issues and is frequently called upon by Congress to conduct surveys, provide data, and testify on transportation legislation.

Mississippi Valley Association

AASHTO divides its member departments into four geographical regions.  The Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) consists of those states primarily in the Midwest including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Map

The other AASHTO regions cover the western states (WASHTO); northeastern states and the District of Columbia (NASHTO); and the southeastern states and Puerto Rico (SASHTO).

What is the Mississippi Valley Conference?

The Mississippi Valley Conference of State Highway and Transportation Officials (MVC) was organized in 1907, even prior to the establishment of a national transportation organization which became AASHTO.  The goal of the MVC is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated and balanced transportation system that adequately serves the transportation systems and needs of the 10 member states.

Member states cooperate to:

  • develop and improve methods of administration, planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of highways and other transportation modes;
  • study and research problems connected with all transportation;
  • promote needed transportation legislation;
  • develop technical administration, highway and other transportation operation standards and policies; and
coordinate with the United States Department of Transportation, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and other agencies to strengthen and improve a balanced transportation system.
